Psalms 1:4
“The wicked are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.”
What does Psalms 1:4 mean?
The contrast here is between people rooted in God's ways (described in the previous verses) and those who ignore Him. The wicked are compared to chaff, the worthless husks separated from grain during threshing, blown away by wind without weight or substance. This image suggests that living apart from God leaves you unstable and directionless, easily swept along by whatever currents come your way. The psalmist isn't saying destruction comes immediately, but rather that without a solid foundation, there's no real staying power. In contrast, the righteous person is like a firmly planted tree. Both pictures remind us that how we live now shapes whether we stand firm or drift away when life gets difficult.
