Proverbs 4:24
“Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you.”
What does Proverbs 4:24 mean?
This verse encourages us to guard what comes out of our mouths and to distance ourselves from dishonest or twisted speech. The ancient wisdom here recognizes that the words we use and the people we listen to shape who we become over time. A "perverse mouth" means speech that's deliberately misleading, corrupting, or meant to harm, while "corrupt lips" suggests flattery, deception, or language that twists truth. The practical invitation is to take responsibility for our own speech first, then to be thoughtful about whose voices we allow close to us. If we find ourselves regularly speaking in ways that demean others or bend the truth, that's worth noticing and changing. Similarly, if we're constantly around people who manipulate through words or feed us cynicism, we might need to create some healthy distance. This isn't about judgment, but about protecting our own integrity and the health of our relationships.
