Proverbs 28:22
“A stingy man hurries after riches, and doesn’t know that poverty waits for him.”
What does Proverbs 28:22 mean?
The person consumed by greed and fear of scarcity often ironically rushes toward the very poverty they're trying to escape. When we clutch money too tightly, refusing to share or trust, we miss opportunities to build genuine relationships and community that actually sustain us through hard times. The verse suggests that stinginess blinds us to an uncomfortable truth: our constant grasping and anxiety about not having enough can actually create the emptiness we dread. Sometimes the path away from poverty involves learning to let go and trust, rather than holding everything in a white-knuckled grip.
