What does Proverbs 26:19 mean?
Imagine someone spreading a hurtful rumor about you, then laughing it off by saying they were "just kidding" when confronted. Proverbs is calling out this particular kind of cruelty: the person who uses deception or hurtful words as a weapon, then hides behind the excuse of humor. The point is that pretending something was a joke doesn't undo the damage or make the deception acceptable. This matters because it names something many of us recognize from real life. We've either done this ourselves or been on the receiving end of it. The proverb is essentially saying that our intent doesn't get to override the actual harm we cause. If you wound someone with words or actions and then claim you were just joking, you're not fooling anyone about what actually happened.
