What does Proverbs 23:33 mean?

When we're caught in addiction or under the influence of something destructive (the chapter's talking about wine here), our perception of reality starts to break down. We see things that aren't there, we misinterpret what's happening around us, and our judgment becomes completely unreliable. It's a sobering reminder that what we consume doesn't just affect our body, it clouds our mind and distorts how we understand the world around us. Whether it's substance abuse or other compulsions that pull us under, the point is that we lose touch with reality itself, which is one reason these patterns are so dangerous and so hard to think clearly about when we're in them.
