What does Proverbs 20:25 mean?
Making a serious commitment to God or another person without thinking it through can trap you into a situation where you later regret what you've promised. The writer of Proverbs is cautioning against the impulse to make grand spiritual promises in a moment of emotion or conviction, only to back away once the initial feeling fades or reality sets in. When we vow something rashly and then have second thoughts, we find ourselves caught between the discomfort of keeping an ill-considered promise and the guilt of breaking it. The wisdom here isn't that vows don't matter, but that they matter enough to deserve our careful thought beforehand, so we make promises we actually intend to keep.
