What does Proverbs 20:22 mean?

When someone wrongs us, the first impulse is often to even the score. This verse gently redirects that instinct, inviting us to step back from revenge and trust God instead. The wisdom here isn't about passivity or ignoring injustice, but about recognizing that our attempts to repay evil usually just multiply harm and pull us into the very patterns we're fighting against. By waiting for God's intervention, we're not staying helpless. We're actually positioning ourselves to receive real justice and peace, rather than getting trapped in a cycle of retaliation that leaves everyone wounded. Sometimes the hardest but most freeing choice we can make is to let go of the need to be the one who sets things right.
