What does Proverbs 20:14 mean?
The buyer in the marketplace loudly complains that the goods are worthless or overpriced, hoping to negotiate a lower deal. But once the transaction is complete and the seller can no longer hear, the same buyer brags about what a great purchase he actually made. It's a wry observation about human nature: we're willing to talk ourselves and others down to get a bargain, then turn around and celebrate our own shrewdness. The proverb gently calls out the gap between what we say for advantage and what we actually believe, inviting us to notice where we might be less than honest in our dealings with others.
