What does Proverbs 19:16 mean?

Living with integrity and attention to what matters most actually protects us, while dismissing wisdom and running roughshod over what we know to be right leads us toward destruction. The proverb isn't necessarily about physical death, but about the slow erosion that happens when we ignore conscience and consequence. When we pay attention to the principles that keep us grounded (whether you understand these as God's guidance, inner moral compass, or simply hard-won wisdom), we're caring for our whole selves. Contempt, by contrast, is dangerous because it closes us off from learning and growth, trapping us in patterns that hollow us out from the inside.
