What does Proverbs 18:16 mean?
When we develop and share our talents, they open doors we couldn't have forced on our own. A teacher's skill in explaining difficult concepts, an artist's ability to move people, a listener's gift for compassion, or a builder's craftsmanship—these things naturally attract attention and create opportunities. The writer of Proverbs noticed something true about human nature: we're drawn to people who bring real value, and those people find themselves welcomed into spaces and conversations they couldn't have accessed otherwise. This doesn't mean talent guarantees success or that hard work alone solves everything. But it does point to something many of us experience: when we invest in becoming genuinely good at something that serves others, doors tend to open. The "great men" here aren't necessarily kings, but anyone of influence or importance. The verse simply reminds us that developing what we do well is a more effective path forward than trying to network our way up or demand a place at the table.
