What does Proverbs 17:27 mean?

There's real wisdom in knowing when to keep quiet. Someone who doesn't feel the need to fill every silence or defend themselves constantly shows they have genuine confidence in what they know. By contrast, the person who talks endlessly often does so out of anxiety or insecurity. The second part about being even-tempered points to something similar: staying calm when you're provoked takes deep understanding. It's easy to lash out when you're upset, but it takes real self-awareness and inner strength to respond with steadiness. Both parts of this verse point to the same truth: true knowledge and wisdom show up as restraint, not as noise.
