What does Proverbs 12:10 mean?

A person who tries to live rightly shows kindness even to creatures who can't repay them, while someone hardened by selfishness can be cruel even when they think they're being kind. The verse is saying something deeper than just pet care: it's pointing out that our character shows itself in how we treat those who are vulnerable and defenseless. When we're gentle with an animal in our care, we're developing the habit of compassion itself. Conversely, cruelty dressed up as something else, or mercy that comes with strings attached and hidden motives, reveals what's really going on in a person's heart.
