What does Proverbs 10:16 mean?

When we work honestly and seek to live with integrity, that effort itself becomes life-giving—it brings us stability, purpose, and a clear conscience. But when people gain more wealth or power through dishonest or harmful means, that increase actually pulls them deeper into wrongdoing, creating a cycle where they need to do more wrong to protect what they've gained. The contrast here isn't saying poor people are righteous and rich people are wicked. Rather, it's pointing to a deeper truth: the path we choose shapes us. Honest work, even if modest, feeds our souls and our futures. But taking shortcuts and cutting corners, even if they seem profitable in the moment, leaves us spiritually and morally bankrupt.
