“I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.”
What does Philippians 2:28 mean?
Paul is writing about sending Timothy back to the Philippian church after a time of separation, and he's being honest about his own heart in doing so. Yes, Timothy needs to go help them, but Paul also admits he's eager to send him quickly because seeing Timothy return safely will bring Paul comfort and relief from worry. There's something beautifully human here, even vulnerable, in Paul acknowledging that his caring for other people includes his own need for reassurance and joy. Sometimes we think spiritual maturity means not needing connection or feeling lonely, but Paul shows us that loving people deeply means we naturally want to know they're doing well and see them again.
