What does Philippians 1:9 mean?

Paul is praying that the Philippians' love—their genuine care for God and each other—would grow deeper and more thoughtful over time. He's not asking for them to love *more people*, but for their love to become wiser and more grounded, informed by real understanding rather than just good feelings. The combination of knowledge and discernment matters here. Love without thinking can hurt people or support the wrong things, while knowledge without love becomes cold. Paul wants both working together: a love that knows what it's doing, that can tell the difference between what truly helps and what merely feels good in the moment. It's his way of saying that genuine spiritual growth means our hearts and minds developing together, not separately.
