Philippians 1:16

What does Philippians 1:16 mean?

Paul is acknowledging that some people in his community are preaching about Jesus, but their motives are twisted by ego and personal gain. Rather than genuinely wanting to help others know Christ, they're using their preaching as a way to climb the social ladder or gain status. What makes this especially painful for Paul is that he senses these rivals are actually hoping their success will make his imprisonment and suffering even harder to bear, as if his struggles will somehow highlight their own importance. It's a sobering reminder that good words can come from broken hearts. Even in the early church, not everyone who talked about Jesus was doing it for the right reasons. Paul doesn't say these people should be silenced entirely, though, which speaks to his belief that Christ's message is powerful enough to get through regardless of who's delivering it.
