What does Philemon 1:5 mean?

Paul is telling Philemon that he's heard wonderful things about him: that Philemon genuinely loves others and has real faith in Jesus. What makes this moment special is that Paul is about to ask Philemon for something difficult, so he's first reminding him (and us) that love and faith aren't just nice feelings we talk about, but real qualities that shape how we treat people, especially when it's hard. By naming these strengths in Philemon before making his request, Paul is both encouraging him and appealing to the very values that should guide his response.
