What does Obadiah 1:9 mean?

Obadiah is delivering a tough message to the nation of Edom (descendants of Esau), who had rejoiced when Jerusalem fell and even helped plunder it. This verse warns that Edom's warriors, even those from Teman (a prominent Edomite region known for its wise men), will lose their courage and be unable to defend their land. The "mountain of Esau" refers to Edom's territory in the rocky highlands southeast of the Dead Sea. God is saying their military strength won't save them because they turned away when they should have shown kinship to Judah. It's a sobering reminder that nations and individuals can't escape consequences through force or pride, especially when they've abandoned loyalty and compassion.
