Obadiah 1:7
“All the men of your alliance have brought you on your way, even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. Friends who eat your bread lay a snare under you. There is no understanding in him.””
What does Obadiah 1:7 mean?
Obadiah is describing the collapse of Edom's security in the face of coming judgment. The nation once felt protected by its alliances and friendships, but those relationships crumble exactly when they're needed most, leaving Edom isolated and betrayed. This captures a painful truth about how power and self-reliance can blind us to our actual vulnerabilities, and how fair-weather relationships evaporate under pressure. For those of us going through difficult seasons, this verse can feel uncomfortably familiar. Sometimes we discover that people we trusted or counted on aren't actually there for us when crisis comes. The final line, "There is no understanding in him," suggests that Edom couldn't see what was really happening around them until it was too late. That's both a warning about remaining humble and aware of our real spiritual condition, and a comfort that God sees what we often cannot, and invites us to trust him rather than in shifting human alliances alone.
