“But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary belonged to them; they carried it on their shoulders.”
What does Numbers 7:9 mean?
The Kohathites had a unique and honored role among the Levites: they were responsible for carrying the most sacred items of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant and the altar. Because their hands and shoulders were needed to personally transport these holy things, they didn't receive carts or oxen like the other Levite families did. This wasn't a punishment but rather a sign of their special trust and closeness to God's most precious objects. The verse reminds us that different callings require different provisions, and sometimes the most important work demands a more direct, personal involvement rather than tools or ease.
