What does Numbers 6:9 mean?
This passage addresses an unexpected situation in the Nazirite vow, a special commitment where someone separated themselves to God for a set time, including letting their hair grow long as a visible sign. If a Nazirite was suddenly exposed to a dead body, they became ceremonially unclean, which broke their vow. Rather than abandon the commitment entirely, they could restart: they'd shave their head to mark the defilement, wait seven days for purification, and then begin their vow period over from scratch. It's a compassionate rule acknowledging that sometimes sacred commitments get interrupted by life's hard realities, and God made room for a fresh start rather than permanent failure.
