Numbers 6:5
““‘All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall come on his head, until the days are fulfilled, in which he separates himself to Yahweh. He shall be holy. He shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.”
What does Numbers 6:5 mean?
This verse describes part of the Nazirite vow, a special commitment someone could make to dedicate themselves to God for a set period. One of the outward signs of this dedication was letting their hair grow long and never cutting it, which made their commitment visible to everyone around them. The long hair wasn't magical or inherently spiritual, but rather a physical reminder to both the person and their community that they were set apart for God during this time. It reflected a deeper inner dedication, kind of like how a wedding ring today reminds us of a promise we've made. When the vow ended, they could cut their hair again, marking that season of their life as complete.
