“then he shall confess his sin which he has done, and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add to it the fifth part of it, and give it to him in respect of whom he has been guilty.”
What does Numbers 5:7 mean?
When someone has wronged another person, this verse describes the path back to right relationship: they confess what they did, repay what they took or damaged, and add twenty percent more as a sign of genuine remorse. That extra fifth part matters, because it shows the wrongdoer isn't just doing the bare minimum to check a box, but actually values restoring the relationship. This law reflects something deeply human that we still recognize today: real apology includes concrete action. Words alone don't repair what was broken. If you've taken something from someone or caused them loss, you need to make it whole again, and then some, to show you truly regret the harm. It's a picture of what accountability and genuine repair can look like.
