What does Numbers 4:29 mean?
The Israelites were organizing themselves into groups for the work of maintaining God's tabernacle, and this verse is part of that census. The sons of Merari were one of the three main Levite clans, and they had specific responsibilities in caring for the tent structure itself. God wanted clear organization and accountability, so Moses was instructed to count them carefully by family line. This wasn't just bureaucracy, though, it reflected something deeper: God valued order, knew people by name and lineage, and made sure everyone had a defined role to play.
