What does Numbers 32:40 mean?
After the Israelites conquered the land east of the Jordan River, the tribe of Manasseh (through Machir, one of its family leaders) received the region of Gilead as their tribal inheritance. This verse marks the formal settlement of that territory, recording how the people began to establish homes in the land they'd been given. The context matters here: some tribes wanted to settle east of the Jordan rather than cross into Canaan itself. Moses allowed this on the condition they would still fight alongside their fellow Israelites to help conquer the western territories.
