What does Numbers 31:4 mean?

God instructed Moses to conscript a thousand soldiers from each of Israel's twelve tribes to fight against the Midianites, who had led the Israelites into idolatry and immorality. This was understood as both a military necessity and a religious obligation to address a serious threat to the community's faithfulness. The requirement that every tribe contribute equally emphasized that this was a collective responsibility, not one tribe's burden alone, and ensured that the entire nation stood together in addressing what leadership viewed as a spiritual crisis.
