What does Numbers 31:2 mean?

God is telling Moses to lead Israel in a military campaign against the Midianites, who had led Israel into idolatry and sexual sin that brought a plague killing thousands. The word "avenge" here means to act as a deliverer and protector, restoring justice for what was done to God's people. The second part, "afterward you shall be gathered to your people," is God's gentle way of saying that this will be Moses' final task before his death, which He had already announced was near. It's a reminder that even as leaders face difficult responsibilities, God remains in control of the timeline of our lives.
