What does Numbers 30:10 mean?
When a married woman made a vow or promise to God while living in her husband's household, her husband had the right to hear about it and either confirm or cancel it the same day. This law gave husbands authority over their wives' spiritual commitments, which reflects the patriarchal structure of ancient Israel. If the husband said nothing, the vow stood and the woman was bound to keep it. The underlying assumption was that a wife's major obligations needed her husband's awareness and consent, since they affected the whole household.
