What does Numbers 3:9 mean?
The Levites were set apart as God's special servants for the tabernacle, and this verse formally assigns them to Aaron (the high priest) and his descendants to help with all the sacred work. Rather than being enslaved or conscripted, the Levites were considered a gift—they belonged to the priesthood in the sense that their labor and service were dedicated to supporting Aaron's spiritual leadership on behalf of the whole community. This arrangement meant that while all Israelites had responsibilities to God, the Levites took on the intensive, daily work of maintaining worship and the tabernacle so others could focus on their own lives and livelihoods. It's a picture of how different people are called to different roles, and how some are called to serve in ways that enable the faith of everyone around them.
