What does Numbers 3:46 mean?
When the Israelites were organized in the wilderness, God set aside the tribe of Levi for special service in the tabernacle instead of claiming the firstborn son from every family as he originally had. There were more firstborn sons than there were Levites, so the extras had to be redeemed, or bought back, with payment. These 273 firstborn sons represented the surplus that couldn't be replaced by Levites, and their families paid five shekels each to complete the redemption process. It's a practical arrangement that shows how God made space for his people to participate in his work while honoring the principle that he deserves what belongs to him.
