“Yahweh said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.”
What does Numbers 3:40 mean?
God asked Moses to count every firstborn son in Israel, starting from one month of age. This census was part of a larger purpose: the firstborn males belonged to God in a special way (as a reminder of how God had saved Israel's firstborn during the plagues in Egypt), but they could be "redeemed" or bought back through the Levites, who would serve God in the tabernacle instead. By taking an exact count, Moses could figure out how many Levites were needed and how many firstborn sons' families would need to pay redemption money. It's a practical moment that also reinforces the spiritual reality that everything and everyone ultimately belongs to God, and our lives are measured and known by him.
