What does Numbers 26:2 mean?

God is telling Moses to count all the men in Israel who are old enough and physically capable of serving as soldiers. This was a practical matter for the nation, since they needed to know their military strength as they prepared to enter the promised land. The count organized people by their family groups, which was how Israelite society kept track of inheritance, property, and tribal identity. This census reminds us that God cares about order and preparation, and that sometimes even routine administrative tasks matter when we're moving forward in faith.
