What does Numbers 26:18 mean?

This verse completes the census count for the tribe of Gad during Israel's time in the wilderness. After forty years of wandering, God instructed Moses to count the people again to see how the population had changed since the first census at the beginning of their journey. The number 40,500 represents the adult males of military age in Gad's tribe at that moment, showing God's detailed knowledge of and care for His people, even in their long season of waiting and transition before entering the promised land.
