What does Numbers 24:4 mean?

This verse describes Balaam, a prophet hired to curse Israel, receiving a genuine vision from God instead. The image of someone "falling down" with "eyes open" captures a state of awe and surrender, the body overwhelmed while the spirit remains alert and aware. When we encounter something truly holy, we're often undone by it, yet somehow more awake than ever. Balaam's posture here suggests that encountering God's presence and hearing his words isn't a passive or dreamy experience, but one that shakes us to our core while making us acutely conscious of what's real and true.
