Numbers 22:30

The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long until today? Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?” He said, “No.”

What does Numbers 22:30 mean?

When a donkey speaks and asks Balaam a simple question, it cuts through all the prophet's anger and confusion. The donkey is basically saying, "Look, I've been faithful to you for years. I've never acted this way before. Don't you think something unusual is happening here?" It's a moment of unexpected wisdom from the most ordinary of sources, inviting Balaam to pause and actually listen instead of just reacting. This scene reminds us that sometimes the people (or in this case, creatures) closest to us see things we're missing. The donkey had seen what Balaam couldn't: an angel blocking the path. When we're frustrated or determined to move in a certain direction, we might dismiss the gentle resistance of those around us. But maybe, just maybe, they're seeing a warning we need to hear.
