What does Numbers 22:3 mean?
Fear can grip us when we face something that seems bigger and more powerful than ourselves. The Moabites had just watched the Israelites defeat powerful enemies and grow into a massive population, and that sight shook them deeply. Their distress came from feeling outmatched and vulnerable, uncertain what this large group of strangers might do. This moment captures something very human: when we're afraid, we often reach for the wrong solutions. The Moabites' fear will soon lead them to hire a prophet named Balaam to curse Israel, believing that words or magic might protect them from what they actually cannot control. Sometimes our panic pushes us toward desperation, and understanding that pattern in ourselves can help us pause and ask what we truly need when we're afraid.
