Numbers 22:20
“God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak to you, that you shall do.””
What does Numbers 22:20 mean?
This moment comes after Balaam has already refused a request from a foreign king to curse Israel. When the king sends more impressive messengers with better offers, Balaam asks God again, and this time God says yes, with an important condition: Balaam can go, but he must speak only what God tells him to speak. What's striking here is that God gives permission while also setting a boundary. It's not a blank check. God is saying, in effect, "You want to go? Fine, go. But your words belong to me." This captures something true about how God often works with us: he doesn't always stop us from doing what we want, but he calls us to surrender the outcome and our influence to him.
