Numbers 20:24
““Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.”
What does Numbers 20:24 mean?
God is telling Moses that Aaron won't enter the promised land because of what happened at Meribah, where Moses and Aaron failed to trust God's instructions about bringing water from a rock. Instead of speaking to the rock as commanded, they struck it in anger, making it seem like their own power brought forth the water rather than God's. Even though Aaron was Moses' devoted brother and a faithful priest, this moment of disobedience had real consequences that followed him to the end of his life. It's a sobering reminder that our choices matter, and that being close to God or having done good things before doesn't exempt us from the weight of our actions. Yet the phrase "gathered to his people" also carries dignity and peace, suggesting that while Aaron wouldn't cross into Canaan, he would still die in God's care with his honor intact.
