What does Numbers 20:11 mean?
After forty years of wandering in the desert, the Israelites found themselves without water again, and they complained to Moses just as they had many times before. God told Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses, exhausted and frustrated by the people's constant doubt, struck it with his staff instead—and struck it twice. Water poured out abundantly, so the immediate need was met and everyone drank their fill. Yet this moment cost Moses dearly. His act of striking the rock instead of trusting God's instruction meant he wouldn't enter the promised land himself, despite leading the people there. It's a sober reminder that even leaders who've given their whole lives can stumble when they're worn down, and that God takes obedience seriously.
