Numbers 19:17
““For the unclean, they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the sin offering; and running water shall be poured into a vessel.”
What does Numbers 19:17 mean?
When someone in ancient Israel became ceremonially unclean (through contact with death or illness), they needed a way to restore themselves spiritually and rejoin the community. This verse describes part of that restoration: ashes from a special burnt offering were mixed with fresh, flowing water to create what amounts to purifying water. The combination of these two elements, the ashes and the running water, was then used to cleanse the person. What's touching about this practice is how it acknowledged that uncleanness was real and serious, but also that restoration was possible and available. There was a clear, tangible path back to wholeness. For those of us carrying shame or feeling distant from God, this speaks to the truth that we're never beyond reach, and that restoration often comes through both the hard work and the grace that's offered to us.
