Numbers 18:3
“They shall keep your commands, and the duty of the whole Tent; only they shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary and to the altar, that they not die, neither they, nor you.”
What does Numbers 18:3 mean?
The Levites are given important work in and around the Tabernacle, but there's a clear boundary they must respect. They can handle most of the tasks needed to keep the worship space running, but the most sacred objects and the altar itself are off-limits to them. This isn't arbitrary—in the ancient Israelite system, coming near the holiest items without proper authorization and preparation was thought to bring death, a consequence taken very seriously in their understanding of God's presence. Moses is essentially telling the Levites that their role is meaningful and necessary, but it has limits. By staying within their proper boundaries, they protect both themselves and the priests (represented by "you" and Aaron). There's something reassuring here for anyone who feels called to serve in a limited capacity: your work matters even if you're not doing everything, and sometimes honoring boundaries is actually an act of faithfulness and wisdom.
