Numbers 18:22
“Henceforth the children of Israel shall not come near the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.”
What does Numbers 18:22 mean?
God was protecting the people from a genuine danger here. The Tent of Meeting (also called the Tabernacle) was where God's presence dwelt in a concentrated way, and only the priests, who were specially consecrated and prepared through specific rituals, were allowed to enter most of its spaces. For ordinary Israelites to approach without that sacred preparation would be like touching a live wire, not because God was being arbitrary, but because holiness is powerful and requires proper respect. This wasn't meant to distance people from God, but to keep them safe while drawing them closer in the right way. It established that approaching God matters, that it requires reverence and order, and that there are ways to do it properly. Later in Scripture, especially through Jesus, those barriers would eventually come down, but the underlying principle remains: genuine relationship with God transforms us and calls us to take His presence seriously.
