Numbers 18:15
“Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer to Yahweh, both of man and animal shall be yours. Nevertheless, you shall surely redeem the firstborn of man, and you shall redeem the firstborn of unclean animals.”
What does Numbers 18:15 mean?
In ancient Israel, the firstborn of animals and humans held special significance as belonging to God. This verse gives the Levitical priests the right to receive these firstborns as part of their support, since they had no land inheritance of their own. However, there's an important exception: while firstborn animals could be kept, firstborn sons had to be redeemed (bought back) with a payment, because human life was never meant to be sacrificed or permanently given away. Similarly, firstborn unclean animals (like donkeys) also had to be redeemed since they couldn't be used in temple service anyway. The underlying principle here is that while God claims what is first and best, there are limits to that claim when it comes to human dignity and practical reality.
