Numbers 17:2
““Speak to the children of Israel, and take rods from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.”
What does Numbers 17:2 mean?
God was settling a dispute about who had the right to lead Israel as priests. The community had been grumbling against Moses and Aaron, suggesting others deserved the role. So God asked Moses to collect staffs from leaders of each of the twelve tribes, write their names on them, and place them in the tent of meeting overnight. Only Aaron's staff would miraculously sprout buds and blossoms as a sign that God had chosen the Levites (Aaron's tribe) for priestly service. This wasn't arbitrary or based on human preference, but a clear, visible confirmation of God's choice that everyone could witness.
