What does Numbers 14:28 mean?
God is responding to the Israelites' complaint that they'd be better off dead or enslaved in Egypt than risking their lives to enter the promised land. He's saying: you've made your choice with your own words, and I will honor that choice, even though it grieves me. The people feared they'd die in the wilderness, and God, taking them at their word, allows that generation (except for Joshua and Caleb, who trusted him) to wander for forty years until they naturally pass away before the next generation enters Canaan. This is a sobering reminder that our words matter and that God sometimes lets us experience the consequences of our own doubts and complaints. It's not cruelty, but a kind of respect for human choice. At the same time, it shows God's patience: he doesn't abandon the people entirely, just delays their reward.
