Numbers 14:19
“Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.””
What does Numbers 14:19 mean?
Moses is interceding for Israel after they've rebelled against God, refusing to enter the promised land. He's asking God to forgive them not based on what they deserve, but based on God's character, which Moses describes as abundantly loving and merciful. He reminds God that He's already shown this forgiveness repeatedly throughout their journey from Egypt, so continuing in that same way would be consistent with who God is. This prayer captures something profound about how to approach God when we or others have failed: we don't argue that the failure wasn't serious, and we don't pretend we've earned forgiveness. Instead, we appeal to God's nature and His history of grace. Moses is essentially saying, "You've always been generous with your mercy; please be the God you've always been." That same God invites us to come with the same kind of honest, humble request.
