“That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.”
What does Numbers 13:24 mean?
The Israelites had just sent twelve spies into the land God promised them, and when the spies returned, they brought back an enormous bunch of grapes so heavy it took two men to carry it. This valley got its name from that single, spectacular cluster, which became a symbol of how abundantly fruitful the promised land truly was. The name Eshcol actually means "cluster" in Hebrew, so calling it "the valley of the cluster" was a way of memorializing what they'd seen there. For the Israelites wandering in the desert, that enormous fruit was proof that God's promise wasn't empty, that real abundance awaited them if they'd trust and move forward. Even when fear and doubt later gripped many of them, that grape cluster remained a tangible reminder of what was possible on the other side of faith.
