“Yahweh said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn’t she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.””
What does Numbers 12:14 mean?
Miriam had just criticized Moses for marrying a woman from outside Israel, and God responded by striking her with leprosy. In this verse, God is explaining to Moses why Miriam must be isolated: being publicly shamed or dishonored by a parent would require seven days of separation from community life, so how much more serious is being rebuked directly by God himself? The punishment fits the severity of speaking against God's chosen leader. After her week of isolation outside the camp, Miriam will be restored to the community, showing that even serious wrongs can be forgiven and healed.
