Numbers 11:12
“Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them out, that you should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?’”
What does Numbers 11:12 mean?
Moses is exhausted and frustrated, venting to God about the overwhelming responsibility of leading over a million people through the wilderness. He's essentially asking God: "Did *I* create this nation? Did *I* bring them out of Egypt?" The answer is no, of course, and that's his point. He's reminding God that this is God's work and God's people, not his burden alone to shoulder. The image of carrying infants in one's bosom captures how demanding and all-consuming this task feels to Moses. He's not equipped to nurture and comfort an entire nation the way a nurse tends a baby. This is actually a very human moment, revealing that even the greatest leaders can hit a wall when they feel unsupported. Moses needed to voice his limits and remind himself (and God, in a way) that ultimate responsibility rests with God, not him.
