What does Numbers 1:49 mean?

The Levites were set apart for a different calling than the other tribes of Israel. While every other tribe was being counted for military purposes (this census was taken to organize Israel's army in the wilderness), the Levites were excluded because their role was sacred work, maintaining the tabernacle and leading worship. God was essentially saying: these people belong to me in a particular way, and their contribution to Israel's life will be measured differently. It's a beautiful reminder that not everyone's value comes from the same measure, and God sometimes calls people to different kinds of service than what the world around them is doing.
